Every other year, DACP hosts a week-long Disability Pride Art and Culture Festival. We’ve done six so far and always have the best time bringing in guest artists for residencies, performances, lectures, presentations, and community-building. The festival has usually focused around dance and live performance. For 2016, we’re going to change things up a little bit. This year, we’re part of the national ReelAbilities project and will be hosting Portland’s first ever disability-themed film festival through ReelAbilities! We’ll also be doing other events, and more details to that are on their way as we get closer.
Part of being in ReelAbilities is that we get to screen a number of international films featuring Deaf and disabled artists. We’re currently working as a committee to pick the very best for your viewing pleasure. We’re also going to showcase locally made short films, and you can submit a film now through February 15th. Submission details are below, and the festival application has even more details.
ReelAbilities: Portland
May 27th-29th
Alberta Rose Theatre
All films will be Closed Captioned or subtitled. Audio Description is available for patrons who would like that service. More details on screenings and a schedule will be available this spring.
You can submit your film online through FilmFreeway by visiting: FilmFreeway.com/festival/PortlandReelAbilities
We welcome short (3-30 minute) video submissions by and/or about Disability community made in the Portland-Metro area (Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington Counties). To align with Disability Art and Culture Project’s mission, we prioritize films with an affirmative disability identity message, disability pride, and films that highlight intersections of marginalized identities and voices. We are not looking for films with an emphasis on medical research and cures, disability as pitiful or inspiring, or stories where non-disabled people speak for people with disabilities (or disabled people).
Submission fee is $15 per film.
Deadline for submission is February 15, 2016. Films that are selected must provide Closed Captions or Open Captions (with a black bounding box) by March 29, 2016.
If you do not already have captions, we provide a list of local companies offering captioning services on the FilmFreeway submission form.
