The Disability Art and Culture Project is proud to host the Coverage Defense Committee for our March Dis/Representation discussion forum.

The Coverage Defense Committee advocates to maintain and improve healthcare and independent living access, and shapes supportive and creative solutions on the federal, state, and local levels. They are recipients of Medicaid and Medicare services and providers working together to defend against cuts and ensure adequate care. They are people with pre-existing conditions, people with disabilities, paid and unpaid caregivers, mental health professionals, social service workers, and older people.

“Ultimately this is about the preservation of self-determination. We have been able to devise a life, sometimes a thriving life, out of the services allotted to us through Medicaid programs. The proposed cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act would have a devastating impact on people with disabilities. Our task now is to demand that no roadblocks be put in the path from institutionalization to integration.” – Coverage Defense Committee

At our March discussion, the Coverage Defense Committee will be sharing their stories about Medicaid and Medicare coverage, which they tell to motivate, empower, and show the need for change. They’ll also talk about opportunities for people to participate in advocacy as a way of pressuring decision-makers to do what’s socially just.
